Day 15 - Best Series Finale
Six Feet Under
"I pray you'll be filled with hope for as long as you possibly can."
This was also one of the categories where I didn't have to think too hard. Most of my favorite shows have been cancelled and didn't get the chance to design their final episodes as endings. But even among the shows where the writers had the chance to write actual endings, none of them is capable to compete with the finale that Alan Ball wrote for "Six Feet Under".
"Everybody's Waiting" was a flawless final episode for a show about death. It captured the beauty and the sadness of life and death, it dealt with new beginnings and endings with a lot of hope, it dealt with the uncertainty of where the road is leading, but taking it anyway. Some might think that the last few minutes of the episode are a cheap gimmick to conjure up an emotional response from the audience, but I think that even without the final minutes of the episode, it is still a perfect and emotional ending to the show. Which is why the final minutes of the show wouldn't bother me, even if I felt the same way about them.
The show chose a time in the lives of the characters where everything changed for them, new beginnings, which made the finale not necessarily feel like the end of things, but more like the start of something new (until they all died in their flash-forwards), which I appreciated, because if life consists of anything, then it consists of a series of new beginnings and the show captured it and made me cry and made me feel and I will never forget anything of it.
