Well, here's the first two reviews of my project. I finished watching Summerslam 03 and the Royal Rumble 04 today.
Here's my thoughts:
Summerslam 2003
Overall, I thought this DVD was weirdly edited. The whole thing felt strange and disjointed, but it got better towards the end. Also, there were no extras, which was sucky.
Zach Gowen vs Matt Hardy is listed on the back of the DVD but it's not actually on the PPV cos Zach Gowen got his leg broken by Brock Lesnar. It's stupid they listed it, I think xD
Anyway, rundown of the matches coming up!
World Tag Team Championship Match: La Résistance (René Duprée & Sylvain Grenier) (champions) vs. The Dudley Boyz (Bubba Ray & D-Von) (w/ Spike Dudley)
A good opening match. I completely missed the Dudley Boyz, they were long gone when I started watching wrestling, but I like them from the PPVs I've seen them on. They were fan favourites, entertaining and great PPV openers, they got the crowd going. La Résistance were of course hated, being Frenchmen. But this was an entertaining match, with loads of cool spots. Too bad the Dudleys didn't win, cos Rob Conway hit D-Von with a camera.
The Undertaker vs. A-Train (w/ Sable)
An interesting match. I love Taker, and he was in his biker gimmick at the time which was different. A-Train scares me cos he's hairy xD But it was a good match, with some underhanded tactics when the referee got knocked out. But Taker won, and that's always good. The aftermath was awesome too cos Sable tried to seduce Taker but Taker got her and then Stephanie McMahon came out and kicked Sable's ass xD
Shane McMahon vs. Eric Bischoff
This was incredibly entertaining cos everybody wanted Eric Bischoff to get his ass kicked. But it went crazy after Coach got involved (lol at JR and King's reactions, they were like WTF are you doing Coach??? xD). Coach and Bischoff beat up Shane for awhile until Steve Austin came out. I was like YAY STONE COLD hehehe. He helped Shane win, which was awesome.
Fatal Four-Way Match for the U.S. Championship: Eddie Guerrero (champion) vs. Chris Benoit vs. Rhyno vs. Tajiri
Well, fatal 4 ways are always entertaining. Eddie was hilarious in this match cos he was trying to stay out of the way and only breakup pins xD The amount of broken up pins and stuff in this match was amazing, it was all over the place. I usually find US title matches boring but this was fun. Eddie won too, which was a bonus.
WWE Championship Match: Kurt Angle (champion) vs. Brock Lesnar
It was weird to see Kurt as a face, I'm used to him as a heel. Anyway, this match started off really boring, I wasn't paying much attention. After the ref got knocked out, the match got really interesting. When Vince came down to ringside, I thought Kurt would lose for sure, but he held on. Vince's reaction when Brock tapped out was PRICELESS xD I was glad Kurt retained.
Kane vs. Rob Van Dam
It's always a pleasure to see RVD, he was a great athlete. This was a No DQ match, which made things more interesting. Kane mostly dominated but RVD got some amazing moves in. It ended after RVD attempted a move and Kane caught him in midair. Sucky ending, but good match.
Elimination Chamber Match for the World Heavyweight Championship: Triple H (champion) (w/ Ric Flair) vs. Randy Orton vs. Chris Jericho vs. Goldberg vs. Shawn Michaels vs. Kevin Nash
I LOLed greatly when the match began with Shawn and Chris, considering how they've been feuding lately xDDD Heehee, it made me laugh. I LOLed even more when JR said they didn't like each other heheheh xDD Anyway, this was a good match. Loads of exciting moments and Shawn's in it, so that's always good (I <3 my Shawnie). Kevin Nash is a huge guy, but he went first. Goldberg kicked some ass, he eliminated Shawn & Chris in succession. Triple H was a huge asshole in this match, I really hated him in Evolution. But LOL at Randy getting eliminated early xD And I laughed out loud when Triple H came out of the chamber and Shawn superkicked him right back in hehehehehe xD :D I was bummed Trips won, but it was still a great match. The post match beatdown on Goldberg was a sucky ending though.
Overall, Summerslam 03 was a rather good PPV that was strangely edited. Seriously, watch this thing and you'll see that they rushed the release, considering there's no extras or anything.
Match of the night = Elimination Chamber
Star of the night = Shawnie (cos of the way he kicked Trips back into his chamber xD)
Marks out of 10 = 7 and a half
Royal Rumble 2004
The 04 Rumble was a good PPV, purely because of the Rumble itself and Shawn and Trips' match, both amazing matches. The rest of the PPV was so-so. One annoying thing about this PPV? The first three matches were over in less then 40 minutes o_O The majority of the PPV was taken up by the two main events.
Rundown:
World Tag Team Championship Tables Match: Evolution (Ric Flair & Batista) (champions) vs. The Dudley Boyz (Bubba Ray & D-Von)
Once again the Dudleyz open a PPV, but this time it's their speciality, tables! To win this match, only one member of a team had to go through a table. Fun, right? Not when the match is over in less than 5 minutes. This match lasted 4:23. Everybody wanted Evolution to lose, but Batista put D-Von through a table and won that easy. It was sucky.
WWE Cruiserweight Championship Match: Rey Mysterio (champion) vs. Jamie Noble (w/ Nidia)
If you thought the last match was bad, this one was even worse. It was only 3:12!! It was over before I knew it. Thankfully Rey retained. Jamie had his blind girlfriend Nidia with him and she grabbed Jamie's foot, thinking he was Rey and cost him the match xD Jamie yelled at her after the match lol. Apart from that, not much else happened in this match.
Eddie Guerrero vs. Chavo Guerrero (w/ Chavo Guerrero Sr)
Guerrero vs Guerrero, this was a good match. Longer then the last two matches put together (8:03), but still shorter then I'd like. Eddie was trying to keep his temper in check for the whole match, and it showed. He won, and afterwards beat up both Chavo and his Dad lol.
WWE Championship Match: Brock Lesnar (champion) vs. Hardcore Holly
So THIS was the last time Hardcore Holly had a title shot? Hmm, I think I see why. This match wasn't that good. It wasn't exactly *bad* but it was just wasn't that interesting. I'm not a huge fan of Brock Lesnar, so this match didn't have me jumping for joy. It was shorter then Eddie/Chavo too, at 6:30.
Last Man Standing Match for the World Heavyweight Championship: Triple H (champion) vs. Shawn Michaels
This is where the PPV finally picked up, with this WHC match. As soon as I saw Shawn was in it, I knew who won (cos Shawn hasn't had a major title outside of tag team titles since 2002), but I knew it would be good cos he was in it. I wasn't wrong! This match was AWESOME. Both Shawn and Trips looked strong, but Shawn stole the show. I know why they call him the SHOW STOPPER!! No matter how many times Trips knocked him down, he got right back up again. He bled bucketloads too. The thing that annoyed me though was that Shawn had the match won - he hit Sweet Chin Music and both he and Trips collapsed. The match ended in a stupid double count out >_> Trips retained, but Shawn was the real winner, he got a huge ovation from the crowd and he walked out of the arena on his own two feet. A fantastic match, Shawn never disappoints me, I could watch him all day.
Royal Rumble Match: Chris Benoit enters #1 and wins
The other highlight of the PPV was the Rumble itself. Yeah, Benoit won and he's a murderer, blah blah blah, I don't care. This is the Benoit we should remember, the amazing wrestler! This was an incredibly entertaining Rumble, it had loads of random moments. Highlights included Stone Cold stunning both Eric Bischoff and Paul Heyman before the Rumble, Kane thinking Taker was coming out and being eliminated, Mick Foley coming out and eliminating Randy Orton and Chris Jericho, John Cena, Rob Van Dam, Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle all trying to eliminate Big Show and failing xDD John was adorable in this match, especially when he first came out and saw Nunzio outside the ring and looked at him like o_O LOL. A hugely fun match with loads of cool moments.
Extras were good - there were 4 promos for matches at the Rumble (for the Rumble, Shawn vs. Trips, Brock vs. Hardcore Holly & Eddie vs. Chavo), a couple of interviews before the Rumble (with Kurt Angle & Mark Henry), the aftermath of the Shawn vs. Trips match (when they were getting checked out in the trainers room), a little video of the history of the Rumble (quite cool) and an extra match (Victoria vs Molly Holly - Victoria won, quite a good women's match).
Overall, this PPV was good but only for the WHC title and the Rumble itself. The first 4 matches ranged from decent (Eddie/Chavo), would have been decent if it went longer (tables match), so-so (Rey/Jamie) and boring (Brock/Hardcore).
Match of the night = World Heavyweight Title match
Star of the night = Shawnie (I know, again, but he was a true STAR)
Marks out of 10 = 8
