i want to enter 3 "also rans"

Abe & Mary Lincoln - theirs might have been a bit tumultuous but she was there for him - she believed in him

FDR & Eleanor - the sex may have fled ( although there were all those children before) but he depended on her insight and political savvy

Wobbly Willy & Ida Mckinley - because of the care he took of her

in the 20th century the president's wives were in their own way part of the team
Harry depended on Bess
Grace's charm modified Cal's silence
Jimmy & Rosalynn and even Ronnie and Mommy Nancy

Love is a many splendored thing

On Twitter I posted a top 10 list. Besides these 5, I included the Hoovers, the Grants, the Coolidges, the Madisons and the Reagans. I could have also included the Carters, the Monroes and the McKinleys. I made a conscious decision not to include any presidents who were known adulterers and hence FDR, Clinton, Harding and JFK were disqualified. I agree that Abe and Mary loved one another, and I also don't believe she was as batty as many historians make her out to be, but I still think she was pretty high maintenance.

FDR is a different case in the "adulterers" list
Eleanor made clear that their sexual relations were over
he doesn't seem to have been a serial adulterer
he seems to have needed supportive women - link that to his mother

I like Michelle Obama too. It's unfortunate that so many people can't separate their political preferences from personalities. It's not enough for people to disagree with Obama or Bush or Hillary Clinton or Romney, they seem to feel that they have to hate them and their families too. All of these people are very accomplished and often very generous and unselfish too.
