I'm not anti-Ron/Hermione or anything, but I don't think Ron caring about Hermione means he's in love with her. Regarding her empty seat and making her cry...well, gosh, would you only care about a lover being in tears or Petrified but not a friend? I expect Ron would be equally motivated by Harry's empty seat if it had been Harry. Don't know about the crying, if only because of gender roles and all. And I think Harry cared plenty for her in similiar ways. I'm not saying Ron DOESN'T love her, I'm just saying, I wouldn't take "caring about her the same way Harry probably would" as proof of romantic love.
