I don't believe for a second that a parent will favour a child over others just because that child makes friends easily

While it doesn't make sense, it does happen. The thing is, if a child turned out to be gifted, I'd think most parents would embrace it, not ridicule it. I mean, it isn't as if this is a child diagnosed with Autism, ADD/ADHD, or something similar. That's when I see it happen, that and when the child was never wanted in the first place and is seen as another mouth to feed. That's not what's going on here.
