Confound Their Politics, Frustrate Their Knavish Tricks

Okay, I just read Twlight.

Rating: Epic Fail

I couldn't  go on any longer without knowing what the big fuss was about. I head it being compared to Harry Potter, but then again, I also heard some negative reviews roaming around that were supposed to enlighten me. Being forewarned, I knew I was gonna read it for the lolz, but I tried to keep an open ( Read more... )

books, fanfiction, fandom, twilight, review, wtf

Oh, Twilight. You're so hilariously awful. Meyer herself seems rather jarringly naive even in her interviews, for a married woman with kids. One shouldn't judge, but it's difficult not eyeroll.

Thanks. You know it's fun to mock. She is staggeringly naive. Might I add, she herself has admitted in so many words that she did no plotting or planning whatsoever. Moreover, she made Bella a Mary-Sue on purpose. Trust me, I am seriously eyerolling.

The story started out decently as a guily pleasure, though; I'll give you that.

Open your eyes Review #1 was... true, I suppose. But I still like the book. I mean, sure it's shallow and not very good plot, but I don't know, there's just something about it, something more than good storytelling. You get caught up in the whole romance (which, yes, is somewhat wretch-tastic at times, but far from always) and I thought the new breed of vampire Meyer created was fascinating, and all the more appealing for having no negative qualities. Phoo on you and your "Epic fail." It really wasn't the *worst* book ever, just not the best.

I can't believe your collegiate mind is defending Twilight.
The premise of the romance is unrealistic and that aspect personally doesn't appeal to me. At least I'm glad you agree with the review. You have to read the parody though. It hilariously highlights the issues with the novel.
I didn't say it's the worst book ever, however. That would be an outrageous statement. I said it's the worst book I've ever read. Subtle semantics change everything, don't they?

"BELLA: Don’t bring logic into this!

LOGIC: :( I’m never here..."

I love it.
Still, though - even if the romance is unrealistic, it's fiction, I mean, do you criticize movies and whatnot? You have to suspend disbelief when you immerse yourself in these sorts of things, especially when they involve mythical creatures.

Of course I criticise movies and whatnot. Don't you form opinions on the films you watch? I am a critical person by nature but that's not the point here.

Fiction falls under the realm of the art of writing. Life is supposed to imitate art and whatnot and I fail to see life imitating Twilight.

romance is unrealistic
Do you mean IRL or the genre itself?
The genre as cheesy or as farfetched as it is portrayed at times has a criteria. It intends to idealise the notion of love.

What does Meyer in the process of creating Twilight express to valorise in terms of the novel's content ( ... )

I didn't think it was THAT bad... It is definitely not life-changing, but it certainly isn't "the worst book ever". I thought Werther and Catcher in the Rye were much more discardable than this one (despite them being "classics" and all that)

IMO, it is a good kill-time/look-at-all-the-clichés-of-a-lovestory kind of book. Plus, it is a good lesson of how the ties of a family (chosen or not) can overcome problems. I dunno, I liked it though I wasn't expecting a Harry Potter-like masterpiece at all.

All I said was it's the worst I've ever read which is different from saying there are no books out there worse than Twilight. Hope that makes sense now.
I'm glad I found someone who feels the same way about Cathcer in the Rye. I hated that book yet everyone goes on and on about how fantastic it is. I think it had to do with my incompatability with the protagonist (Holden?).

The reason I prolly have such a strong opposition to Twilight is because I heard it being compared to Harry Potter and so my expectations got built up. I wasn't preparing myself for a full-on romance with weak fantasy elements. There's also the fact the female tweens and teens alike are becoming brainwashed. If you lurk around enough, you'll find that girls are actually turning down nice guys because they're waiting for an Edward and demand no less.

Lmao, I could see that happening...

Wow, I think you are also the first person to not like "Catcher..." (Yes, Holden) as much as me. Cool! One more validation for the fact that we've remained friends so long, lol.

I can imagine the anger and disappointment if you were expecting as good a plot as the HP novels. I'm sorry about that.

I picked Twilight up to see what the fuss was about and though I realized the first moment it wasn't really a masterpiece, I kind of got sucked into the whole love story; she tell the story nicely.

And as for the bad role model drama goes; well, I never look at a book for a role model or a paradigm of how to behave; I guess that's why I don't agree with all those people who are offended by the type of relationships offered there. When I pick a book up, I look for a story that is told to me; nothing more.

Ah well! :p

I also don't go looking for role models in what I read or watch. It's just that there are young impressionable girls getting sucked into the whole Bella/Edward dynamic. I'm gonna make another post with examples soon.
I can't argue too much with you in how you consider the story well told. There is no one set style of writing but the book didn't meet my standards of how a story should be written. I found it bad overall.
