Beyond Cliché

I have one word that have moved beyond cliché in my mind, SMIRK. Please, for the love of all that you hold dear, do not have everyone in the Wizarding World smirk. hp fandom has totally ruined the word 'snark' for me. I can't use it anymore without cringing, because it's used so often and so wrongly and it just makes me gag. hate it, hate it, hate it.

I'm pretty much over 'smirk', too, now that I think of it. damn you, fandom!

snark
1. A system failure. When a user's process bombed, the operator would get the message "Help, Help, Snark in MTS!"
2. More generally, any kind of unexplained or threatening event on a computer.

'Snark' is a geek word too, and that's the meaning I knew first. Imagine my confusion.

Snark was used a long time before computers. Look at Lewis Carrolls' poem "The Hunting of the Snark". Written in the 1870's IIRC. That's where I always assumed the word came from.

Funny this should come up. Today, for the first time ever, I heard the word 'snarky' used on TV (in the soap I watch).

First time I ever heard it was on Homicide: Life On The Streets.
