I'm fascinated by what might have happened to Norrington as a consequence of letting Jack walk away. Courts-martial do indeed pop up occasionally in POTC fic, so I thought I'd share with you a resource I've been using for what I'm writing. That's why Norrington turned in his resignation, right?
Though I doubt that was a legitamate way of getting out of the Navey. I don't know, but when I read Hornblower, I get the sense that you have to go through with the Court-Marshal and hope to God that they find you innocent.

I don't think they ever say whether he resigned before or after he could be court-martialed. Or maybe the Governor was just using 'resignation' as a euphemism for 'cashiered'.
