Rating: G
Word count: 100
Characters/pairings: James/Elizabeth
Notes/warnings: Challenge: triangles

At first, James thinks he'd have more chance with Elizabeth if he weren't a sailor. Every promising conversation is followed by weeks of absence, and he is painfully aware it does not make her heart grow fonder. When she throws him over for Turner, he tells himself it's because the sea would always have taken him away from her.

Later he watches her climbing the rigging, barefoot and sunburned like a boy, to watch the waves race by from high above where he's scrubbing the deck. It's only then he thinks he might always have lost her to the sea.
