Saturday-day was spent dining on delicious Indian food with the family (plus Cassie). Maeg, Becky, Cassie, and I went bowling afterward. I later slipped and fell in Stop And Shop due to buckets and buckets of hurricane-related rain, but who's counting ( Read more... )

I think having a landlord that does not live with you may be key.

I think shithole landlords congregate in and around Boston. Not to say that they aren't everywhere, but I had so many bad experiences up there and the landlord I have now is like Jesus reincarnate. He doesn't give a shit what you do (hello, I do laundry in my kitchen with facilities that didn't come with the apartment!), as long as you pay the rent. And the place is miraculous for a pre-war building. How does that work out? I don't know, but it's amazing.

Why can't the rest of 'em take a hint?

But my point is: I wish you guys luck. I know there are gems out there. Maybe you should be consulting a psychic to find the right one.

The landlord at our first apartment was completely amazing. He and his wife and family lived below us. They used to have house-blessing gatherings with their monk-friends. They used to cook scores of Indian dishes and bring us tin-foil tubs full of it. They never complained about a damn thing. We used to clod-hop around and be merry without so much as a thought! Sadly, it was a really pricey apartment. It was also MASSIVE so heating it was a bitch. And there was no on-site laundry (such a pain for a pricey place).

We had our reserves about our current landlord, but hoped for the best. OOOPS.

Our landlord is pretty amazing too. Well, in that he stays completely out of your hair and lets you do anything you want basically (besides paint the walls, wahhh).
