Summary: Incoming hail storm warning in effect for...
----------
By all means, Fuji was a social butterfly, mostly for work reasons. He had no real love for social events, but he did not have any dislike for them either, it simply just was to him. Like how you need to stand in line in a supermarket or shooting those you do not want to talk between the eyes. All in all, they were just that, an extended workday with alcohol that he could write off as a business expense and get reimbursed for later.
But this time it was different; the atmosphere was suffocating, to put it simply. It was not the people, it was not the location, but something was so heavy on his shoulders that the spy had trouble breathing. Even a after a few hard drinks, the situation only seemed to worsen. Although he still carried on his social duties with no difficulty, the desire to remove himself until he had somehow resolved his sudden asthma was growing stronger by the moment.
For various reasons, Saeki kept a very close eye on the spy throughout the party. The other had looked a bit more... stressed than usual. Which considering Fuji rarely let anything get to him, was saying something. He himself did not mind the annual party, and occasionally used it as an excuse to land more stacks of papers on his secretary's (or in this case, the temp's) desk and watch their eyes narrow to that one beautiful glare that said he was very lucky to still be alive.
He nursed his first drink as he conversed with various work-mates and chatted amiably with the higher-ups. He had a reputation to uphold, and several people to convince he was still as lazy as ever. Everyone's hair might be let down for this one night a year, but that did not mean that the internal games stopped. ... They were only made a bit more casual. Still, throughout it all he kept one eye trained on Fuji, worry growing in the pit of his stomach. Saeki was nervous. He hoped his plan would follow through, but he had no way of being certain. Not with Fuji.
It would really take someone who knew Fuji well to recognize the very minute details that gave away the spy’s true state. The younger man continued to wear his eternal smile as he joked and mingled as he was drilled to do, making his rounds through the participants until his drink ran dry, again, where he excused himself to get another one. All the talking was hard on his throat, and in turn, his liver.
Saeki watched Fuji go for another drink, but decided not to go after the other just quite yet. He excused himself from his chat with a group of secretaries from the Tech department and went to find some place quiet enough to clear his mind. He had no doubt that Fuji would stay at least long enough to make the rounds, but facing the spy after keeping his relationship with An from him for so long was a bit... hard.
The bartender was easily swayed by the smiles that Fuji was famous for, and his drink was quickly served. Picking up the glass, the spy rewarded the man with another brilliant grin as he surveyed his surroundings, drawing up an estimate of just how many more people he should go through to reach the quota he had hoped to make for the night. After some more calculations he come up with the conclusion that he had made sufficient progress to warrant a well-deserved break. The spy headed for the balcony that he had caught sight of earlier in the night. The rest should help take his mind off… whatever it was that was bothering him and besides, he was quite sure the view would be better from up there.
Climbing the stairway, Fuji smiled gratefully as he welcomed the fresh air that rushed at him the moment he opened the door. Delighted to find the area mostly deserted, he slipped through the doorway noiselessly.
Having found all the vacant rooms rather, erm, 'occupied', Saeki resigned himself to finding somewhere relatively public to catch some fresh air. He remembered from last year that the balcony had provided a very nice view of the city, as well as a few of the rooms above. Hopefully he would be able to spot some likely 'candidates' for empty rooms if it were too crowded outside. Cracking open the doorway, Saeki closed his eyes and took a deep breath of the crisp night air before stepping through and surveying the surroundings.
Palms flat on the railing, the spy marveled at the wondrous scenery. The fresh breeze was doing miracles for him, brushing away the stress of work and other unnamed burdens with each soothing gust. Taking a deep breath, Fuji closed his eyes and smiled.
Saeki spotted the spy immediately by the railing, but hesitated in actually approaching him. The entire point of getting away from the crowd was so that he could gather his thoughts away from Fuji, not right next to him. Still... it did not look like he had much choice in the matter, so he continued on his way onto the balcony, acting as if he had not seen Fuji. He kept his gaze upwards to add on to the charade. Hm. There was a room two floors up that looked promising...
Although Fuji had his eyes closed, the familiar clicks of Saeki’s steps did not escape the spy’s ears, a sound that he could pick out through a symphonic orchestra of explosions. But he did not react; he simply stayed as he was and tried to keep his attention on the light breeze swirling around him.
Saeki did his best not to interrupt Fuji, and instead settled on the other side of the now completely deserted balcony, watching the view below. He had caught movement in almost all of the windows, and he was not completely willing to try his luck just yet in the few that were supposedly 'deserted'.
Fuji finally opened his eyes when he realized that Saeki might not be leaving anytime soon. Then the best option would be to play it safe and acknowledge the other before the situation got too strange. He was supposed to be acting normal, after all.
“Not even going to say hello?” The spy asked good-naturedly while he kept his view forward.
"We've already said hello, but I could always repeat it if you want." Saeki smiled, eyes shifting towards Fuji. "You looked like you were enjoying yourself."
“If you wish to get technical.” Fuji laughed a little. “It is good once in a while to be on the surface.” He added quietly.
"99.8% of marriages end in technicalities." He smiled passively at the few passerby far below. "But yeah, fresh air is nice once and a while."
“Saa…” The spy replied quietly.
Out of the corner of his eyes, Fuji looked much as he always did. The same smile, the same hair brushing against closed blue eyes... but there was something missing from the picture. Saeki frowned. It was as if the spy were blocking him out. Purposefully treating him as he had right after- His eyes widened a fraction of a centimeter. As if they had just met. Again. "Nice party, eh?"
“Yes.” Fuji agreed pleasantly, but offered up no more kind words.
"Hey, Fuji..."
“Yes?”
"Don't you ever get tired of acting?" Saeki was careful to keep his eyes on the scenery in front of him, and away from Fuji.
The younger paused very slightly before giving an amused chuckle. “What a random question.” He mused.
The analyst turned, leaning his arms and back against the railing so he could watch the spy's reactions. "Is it, really?"
“Quite.” Fuji laughed even as he kept his face forward. “You seem have too much to drink already.”
"That's rather amusing coming from the guy who's drank three times as much as I have so far." Saeki's martini had been left on a table, nearly untouched before he had come upstairs.
"But you don't see me making strange remarks."
"I don't think that was all that strange a remark."
“If you say so.” Fuji left it at that.
Saeki continued smiling pleasantly at Fuji. "... You didn't answer the question."
“Hmm…” Fuji tilted his head, a thoughtful expression on his face. “As much as you do I suppose.”
"Is that why you've been acting for the past several days?"
“Oh? Is that what you’ve been doing for the past several days?” The younger man finally turned and faced his friend. “I didn’t notice at all.” But his tone contradicted with his words immensely.
Saeki smiled, but the movement was anything but pleasant. "That's odd. And here I thought you noticed everything."
“Saa…” Fuji returned the smile. “Maybe you overestimate me.”
"Or maybe you're the one who underestimated me." Saeki did not even blink as a stray breeze ruffled his bangs, eyes only on Fuji.
The wind momentarily caused the spy’s eyes to be hidden beneath his hair. “Who knows?” The voice was as neutral as a piece of blank paper. “Not that I would be much fun on video game nights.”
"There, see? You do know everything." Saeki tisked, shaking his head. He had been over at An's place for more than just video games lately. "And here you wanted me to tell you."
Fuji smiled gently. “Maybe I do, maybe I don’t.”
"Oh?" Saeki mirrored the smile. "Does that mean it mattered?"
“Huh? What mattered?” An expression of innocence.
"Whether I was or I was not?"
“You were what?”
"Hm, that's a good question." The analyst rubbed his chin. "What was I, anyway?"
“Scientifically, you are classified under Homo sapien, but if you are talking about biologically…”
A smile. "Ah, was I human, then? If so, that leaves the question... what am I now?"
“Saeki.” Fuji sighed as he shook his head in good humor. “You sure you didn’t drink too much? You are not making much sense.”
"Of course. I haven't spilled any dirty secrets yet, have I?" Saeki winked.
Fuji chuckled as he turned back to the view. “I’m glad to hear that.”
Saeki paused for a moment before asking, "Would you like me to?"
“That would be purely up to you, won’t it?” Fuji said casually, his voice almost a whisper.
"But why spill something no one wants to hear?" Saeki looked up at the stars, leaning more on the railing.
“Maybe you just need to find the right audience.” The younger man suggested, pushing himself off of the railing.
"I suppose that's true. You never seemed very interested in video games."
“Not really.” Fuji brushed the hair out of his eyes. At first he wanted to add something, but decided that it would be better to hold his tongue.
"You're right. It's hard to find the right audience for that one. Especially the multi-player games." He shook his head. "So troublesome."
The spy only nodded nonchalantly.
Saeki's eyes flashed mischievously before returning to neutral territory. "Are you still not interested, or shall I find another audience?"
“That would, again, be up to you.” Fuji smiled gently.
"Are you saying you'd listen?”
"Aren't I listening?"
"As I said, you never seemed very interested before."
"Saa..." The smaller man shrugged.
"Well if that's the case, you should have told me. I could have easily brought some back to my apartment. Consoles aren't all that expensive."
"You know I don't have time." Fuji said evenly. Which was true, the spy was only over for a week or two every few months.
"Oh right, I'm sorry. I keep mistaking you for someone who might be interested in what I have to say." Saeki shook his head and shrugged, as if to say 'what can you do?'
“Subtleness doesn’t fit you well, Saeki.” The younger man finally remarked after a long silence.
"Acting doesn't look good on you either, but I think you might have frozen it there from all the ice chips you've been sending me." If Fuji wanted him to be blunt, he could be blunt.
“Are you saying you are cold then?”
"I'm saying that sometimes, the true intentions are buried underneath. But right now it doesn't seem to me like you would like to hear any of my intentions."
“Again, haven’t I been listening?” Fuji smiled gently, although it was lost in the darkness.
"Have you really?" Saeki's smile was barely there, but pensive. "You've had your head turned towards so many other things that it's hard to tell when you're actually facing me. Let alone actually listening."
From the corner of his eyes, Fuji studied Saeki’s face gently. But he still would not show the analyst anything. “I see.”
"I guess I've just been waiting for a sign that you might actually turn towards me one of these days." Saeki shrugged, looking off to the side. "I guess... I'm wondering if I've just been waiting in vain."
The younger man crossed his arms across his chest, rubbing his arms lightly to warm himself but still kept his back to the other man. “Do you have any idea of what you are talking about, old friend?”
"I don't know." He chuckled, turning back to Fuji and sticking his hands in his pockets. "Do I?"
“That’s what I’m asking you.” The spy mused. “I hope you do.”
“It's hard to tell right now. Because if I don't, I suppose that means everything I've done has been in vain." He gave Fuji a wan smile.
“I can’t say you are making very much sense, my friend.” Fuji finally turned to Saeki, “You’ve had too much, I’ll go get you some water.”
"Such a convenient excuse, isn't it? To attribute everything I've said to alcohol?" Saeki pushed himself off of the railing and began walking towards Fuji. "All the better to ignore my words, eh?"
“If you listen to yourself.” Fuji cautiously backed away several steps. “Maybe you’ll understand my view.”
Saeki continued walking forward, closing the distance between them. "I have. It gets rather lonely when speaking to a wall of ice."
“Saeki.” The spy said, letting some of the sternness their boss was known for seep into his voice. “Stop this.”
"Why, am I hitting too close to home?" Saeki came to a slow stop directly in front of the spy.
“Actually,” Fuji smiled, but stayed his ground. “You might be hitting too close to your limit.”
"And what happens then? You disappear again? Leave me talking to myself instead of a the ice you've been feeding me all evening?" Saeki knew he was pushing it, but he did not know what else to do. It was too much. He was tired of feeling bad for something he had every right to do.
“I really think you should go to home now.” The spy did not answer the question; instead he laid a hand gently on the analyst’s shoulder and smiled faintly. “You are talking nonsense.”
"You know, you're right. I am talking nonsense. Although I don't think it would matter one way or the other, since you've never listened. I just thought..." His eyes softened for a fraction of a second before hardening again. "Well, if you'll excuse me, I should get back to my date. I'd hate for her to have to listen to too much gossip down there without someone sober to talk to."
"I'm glad to hear that you care about your date." Fuji chuckled, determined to ignore any implication or advances the other man was trying to make. "Don’t be embarrassed, you don't have to make a excuse to so, go right on ahead."
Saeki gave Fuji a brilliant smile that didn't reach his eyes. "You're right, I don't have to many any excuses. Because there was never anything to excuse myself from, was there?" He clicked his heels together and gave Fuji a bow. "Enjoy the party, Fuji-san. I hope you find someone to listen to who's not as boring as I have been." And with that, Saeki brushed right past Fuji, eyes focused on the door behind the spy.
Fuji closed his eyes and smiled, returning the bow gracefully and formally. “Good night, Saeki-kun.” He murmured politely as the other brushed past him. “Take care.”
"I did... for you." Saeki breathed, possibly too soft for the spy to hear as he continued across the balcony and through the door, mask already in place. He had no urge whatsoever to rejoin the party, but it would have to do for now until he could slip away again. It would not do to break down in public, now would it?
[OOC: Saeki and An have been dating since the beginning of June, but the idiot failed to mention this to Fuji, whom he has had but did not have a relationship with for years. But those two in particular hadn't really started anything until Fuji came back to Japan. Neither he nor Fuji have ever mentioned anything of the sort that might indicate they were more than 'old friends' with benefits, so Saeki was 'technically' single and apparently decided to do something about it to push Fuji along. Fuji being Fuji, found out about An sometime in early July when he returned from a mission.
Saeki and An broke up directly before the party, and though they both arrived together, they spent a great deal of the party apart. As far as this mun knows, they haven't told anyone yet about the breakup, or the relationship for that matter... at the time of this log. ^_^]
