Since Reed Richards first arrived, he has been trying to determine a way to bring everyone home. With Tony Stark's help, they managed to bring into the interdimensional bridge area in Manhattan and run a quick scan. What Reed found was an incomplete and completely jarbled machine with huge gaps in equations that even he could not fill. Nonetheless, he's been working relentlessly to find a way to get everyone home. It also helps getting his mind off the destruction of his own universe. Unfortunately, he breaks down in front of Johnny Storm and tells him everything which subsequently inspires him to not fix and draw from the interdimensional bridge, but build a new one completely from scratch.
Reed has built a bridge in canon before. He can feasibly do one in under a month given no food or sleep. On May 30th he required the idea to build a new bridge. By June 20, he'll be at least done with rough blueprints. Putting together the machine would be the easy part and can be done in about two weeks if Reed works nonstop. It would also be a mini portal as opposed to the gigantic ones everywhere else (and in his canon). Normally, he would check and recheck his work, but he's operating on high levels of stress and depression and a dash of hysteria, so he's going to be sloppy with his work.
Now, here comes the fun stuff. Reed is going to finish a mini interdimensional portal on the seventh of August and being an eager beaver, takes it immediately for a spin. However, as Reed has been messing with science and an alternate universe that's upside down, his interdimensional bridge will be teleporting in loved ones from various dimensions, but they'd be...messed up. They would look like deformed, gigantic, clay monsters lashing at everything and everyone out of pain and anger. They'd be coming in swarms (about...one hundred, give or take) and Reed will be overpowered. As they come over the city of Manhattan, Reed will be trying to snap himself out of it and fix the problem.
The event will take three days--enough time for your characters to come face to face with deformed loved ones from home and fight or flight. By the third day Reed should be able to fix the portal and bring all the monsters back to their home world one by one (he'll be asking for heroes to drop them off at wherever he's working). However, he'll stop anyone trying to jump in the portal after them as he isn't sure what is exactly on the other side (unless your character has a death wish--take it up with the mods). Once they're all gone in the portal, Reed will turn his fist into a gigantic elastic hammer and smash the ever living shit out of the portal in a fit of primal rage.
After this, Reed will be bouncing off to the borders of New York City in order to activate his chip. At this time, he is filled with rage, depression, and a massive amount of guilt the size of Texas. He'll rationalize that the interdimensional bridge only allows two of each person to be brought in in order to replace those whose lives have been lost/blah blah/ad nauseum. With that logic, Reed HAS to go, so that two more capable and intelligent Reeds can be ported in and finish the job he failed to do. The capekillers will apprehend Reed before he kills himself and he'll be released after a few days of imprisonment for everyone in Manhattan to beat him up/yell at him/cry at him.

August 7: Reed's portal is activated and 100 deformed monster loved ones from various alternate universes will enter the city and rage havoc. Heroes come to save the day.
August 10: All the monsters are thrown back into the portal and Reed is arrested.
