Rose froze, briefly transfixed by a potent mix of the primordial terror that every once-diminutive mammal feels when faced with the shadow of great wings and the spiritual malaise that accompanies any give glance from those disproportionately large and coruscating orbs Celestia was pleased to call ocular organs.
She raised a hand to shade her own remaining orb of choice, and said, carefully, "Not at all. I must admit, I was glad to see that you'd returned to us, although obviously you have my condolences on having been ripped from the breast or nearest equine equivalent of your nation. Again. Hi. Um."
Ah, the instant rapport between a wizard and her pupil, Rose thought, in a mental tone of distant hysteria.
"It's not a problem. It seems time doesn't pass anywhere else while we're here, after all, so as long as I've no need to worry about my little ponies, I'm happy to do what I can to help people in this world. And it sounds as though you need my help."
"Uh. Yes. The Thorns haven't improved in your absence. Worsened, if anything."
She extracted them from her belt loops, where she had stuck them in a fit of dashing fashion initiative under Kanaya's approving eye, earlier, although in point of fact the arrangement was supremely impractical and she had been trying to avoid walking for the intervening hour lest she be stabbed in the thigh like Odysseus of old, had Odysseus encountered the rare Knit-faced Boar on his boyish hunt rather than its more common brethren. She held them out to the pony.
The wands began to glow with a faint but distinctly sparkly light, and they rose into the air to float in front of Celestia, so that she might better take a look at them.
"Ah," she said, turning them over and, "I see."
She looked down at Rose, smiling kindly.
"I think what these need - and what you need - is a new source of magical power."
