There was something about Tony Stark that always affected Pepper, despite her best intentions and plans. Around him, she was simultaneously at her most and least professional, churning out top notch work while muddying up all the lines that should exist between an employer and employee. Theirs was a long and complicated history, layered by misunderstandings and the evolving role of what Tony Stark required in a secretary ( ... )

He stopped in the doorway, and looked her up and down. He was first taken aback by the "Mr. Stark", which in of itself was innocuous, but she'd burst forth out of nowhere, and practically jumped him in the entryway.

He couldn't help but smirk, and lift an eyebrow in greeting. It wasn't that he wanted to be so snarky, but it was so immediate, a split-second reaction born out of impulse and practice. He'd always been the confident playboy, and a lifestyle and attitude that came with it wasn't easy to shake. "So you're excited to see me? For a second there, I couldn't tell."

The sarcasm was another barrier of defense. Another way to point out the obvious, and that he'd noticed, without actually approaching the subject head-on. He could never do that. However, he could come and see her as a friend. A friend who still made him feel like the weight was just a few pounds lighter, his head was a fraction muddier, and all the while, he had to fight to keep himself as cold as possible. It had taken years of practice.

She knew she'd greeted him like an excited golden retriever, which annoyed her a little, but she couldn't help it. Tony had been a staple of her life for so long, spending months without seeing him wore her thin. This was the most familiar for her, the most stable. Usually, they danced around things and passed remarks back and forth through their carefully crafted filter, but magic had stripped her of that barrier. Pepper said exactly what was on her mind---whether or not she felt like sharing it all.

"Tony," she sighed, a chide in her tone. "Would you have rather I pretended like I didn't care? I mean, I could, if you wanted, but we both know better."

"Well, no. But maybe we could have waited until I got out of the suit?" his eyebrows shot to his hairline, and he just smiled. Then he looked down, and then back to her. Yes, he had walked into the willows in a metal battlesuit of death, and he was standing in the doorway.

"What can I say? I thought it might be nice to talk when I wasn't wearing the suit."

Okay, more sarcasm. He could take it or leave it. It wasn't like it wasn't always a thought away, but he knew people liked speaking with the man, not the helmet, and bright red armor made people nervous. Not Pepper, maybe, but even though the reminder was nice to have present...

Well, he knew she preferred him being himself over Iron Man. Despite being one and the same...well, the psychological effects were fascinating, but not necessary to dwell on.
