Nobody "deserves" to have their house burned down unless they pick up a blowtorch and purposely set it on fire themselves. It really sucks. She's got a miserable year+ ahead of her, dealing with the aftermath of the fire. And no matter how well she picks up the pieces, there's always going to be little things that happen day-to-day that make her feel worse, remind her about it. Our house fire wasn't particularly bad to me, people in our family/family friends are always commenting about how well I "dealt with it," but I still have seen how much it affected my mother.

If you were trying to be funny, you weren't. No matter how awful people are (and I rather like to think of Ben as not an awful person; not to mention blaming people for things their relatives do lends to idiocies like centuries of blood feuds), you can't say that they "deserve" something, especially not something like that. It's not your right to judge.
