So, half of Powderpaint shared their first vlog, and it's all about Mastodon. It's a really good little intro, providing not just the dry facts, but the real attractions over birdsite. Of course, the two needn't be mutually exclusive - plenty of folk maintain accounts on both, and wind up using them very differently, for the kinds of reasons you'll ( Read more... )

WTF Make?! WOW! That is truly shocking! I did subscribe to them for a while, getting an electronic version of Make Magazine. But when the subscription expired, my only way of re-upping was to get both a print and digital, there seemed to be no way to get just the digital, so they stopped getting my money.

Not that my subscription would have saved them.

That is truly sad.

I'm sure someone will pick up and continue the Maker Faires, they're just too popular.

Mmmm! I'd love to see someone (corp, rich benefactor, whatever) continue at least Maker Faire - maybe Make as well, if they could ensure good enough articles to compel people to subscribe. My suspicion is it's not been a priority for a lot of people, myself included, simply given the wealth of miscellaneous resources around the web.

Not that I tend to read any magazines at present, but if I did, I'd be very tempted by Wireframe, which does offer quite a persuasive combination of developer "how we made this", news, tech "how to do this", game history, and so on. Something along those lines, but MCU-oriented, might be a viable offering - and any relaunch would benefit from a good bit of goodwill publicity, saving the trouble of trying to advertise to a fairly diverse audience often heavily protected against online advertising. =:)

You'd think with the sheer volume of money sloshing around the Bay amongst all the tech companies, it'd be trivial to continue such just as a minor PR cost.

Curiously, it's completely business as usual at https://makermedia.com/.

I could get an ecopy of the magazine, but I'd have to pay to be a member, and the combined cost is too ridiculous. It's a great magazine, I'd frequently buy it off the news stand but I pretty much completely refuse to buy physical magazines anymore.

While their sponsored Maker Faires may die, the locally-produced shows I'm sure will continue.
