An edging return to anime

Here's a fifty second clip of the first episode of the 2018 season of Doctor Who, featuring Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor, here seen just newly regenerated, and still coming to terms with who she now is. ^_^ (It's been appearing and taken down a fair bit; here's a mirrorAs a side note, if you're wanting to view images at full size, I'm now tending ( Read more... )

Oh, Guy Delisle! He's done some great stuff. I've only read Pyongyang and Jerusalem, but those were both really cool, and I recommend the latter if you haven't checked it out yet. (Actually, thinking about it, I've also read some of his "Guides for Bad Fathers". Also very funny.)

Ooh, I’ll have to keep an eye out for that! Doesn’t look like ComiXology has it, but they do have Shenzhen, and the other one. ^_^ He does have a nicely observant eye, picking up on the smaller details you don’t hear so much about, and of course, from a personal perspective.

That's a whopper!

Good on ya for recommending AWN :}

It's a little larger than I'm comfortable with posting, but so it goes. ^_^; I do need to try to keep them smaller, as it does impinge upon the quality of the comments - and all of this has been fairly carefully curated, so comments are very much invited. =:/

Mm, I need to visit AWN much more routinely. It's a superb resource for industry news, and without the snootiness of Cartoon Brew - while they were busily mocking My Little Pony: The Movie, AWN offered up an insightful feature on the design of the film's cinematography, going into the surprisingly complex workflow involved in the production, with virtual lenses trained on virtual scenes, in a combination of 2D and 3D processes.

I don't know of any screen capture software that captures protected video content. I suspect you would have to go to hardware capture that strips HDCP for what you want.

Vimeo also stay one step ahead of downloader programs by operating a bounty program where they pay for exploits privately disclosed to them.

Would HDCP be involved? This is just a plain streamed video, after all, much the same as regular Vimeo or YouTube - just rather more fussily constructed. That said, a hardware converter might be quite a fun device to have anyway - ISTR they can be found quite cheaply these days, too ( ... )

It's been possible to send end-to-end encrypted video directly through a browser for a while now due to encryption handling in the video tag. Most downloader methods try to trick the server into offering up the resource served to hardware that doesn't support end-to-end encryption. However, they've gotten a lot smarter about making it very very difficult to get a working download from such, and many services have simply stopped supporting platforms without end-to-end encryption support.

The weakest link in the chain is now the part after the hardware outputs, since HDCP stripping is a relatively trivial problem.

Ah, that's true. Would that also imply mandatory OS support to ensure capturing wouldn't work? (eg the same process of using "screen recording" within QuickTime Player won't work on a protected iTunes film - no idea if third party utilities are able to circumvent that, though I've seen utilities claiming to do as much, but IIRC, that's through a frame-by-frame process of requesting each frame in turn through the API and capturing the output. Simpler is Requiem, but that requires iTunes 11.6 or so - AFAIK, it was unique in such utilities in actually being able to remove the DRM from the file directly, with no transcoding involved. Sadly, the author gave up maintaining it a few years back)

Capturing the streamed, decoded video works, but as noted, the audio sometimes gets glitchy, so I've had to re-capture segments several times. I think I've got it all in decent shape now - it's "just" a matter of carefully stitching them all together at appropriate cuts. Bleah. Such an unnecessary nuisance!

Unfortunately the Dr. Who clip was pulled for copyright violation. I guess we'll get to see the first season next year after the Xmas Special. Assuming the BBC America app doesn't get snippy about us not having a cable subscription since we cut the cord. I think we can get some Dr. Who shows through Amazon, we'll see what happens: that's where we watched last year's Xmas Special.

I've never used a transfer cable to move pix from camera to computer, it's so much faster to pull the card and plug it in to an adapter.

Aw! Still, I suppose that's the way it goes. =:P Frankly, I don't understand why they wouldn't preempt such leaks with the occasional official teaser - that clip would be a wonderfully tantalising glimpse to help keep fans eager for what's in store. Nobody sharing it has any designs on the Corporation's rights - everyone hopes the Doctor continues for many years more ( ... )

Top three I'd like to see, in order, most anticipated first: Big Hero 6, Brave, Fantastic Mr Fox.

Hee! Definitely a fun trio. =:D The first two, IIRC, I pre-ordered as soon as I returned back home from seeing them. ^_^ TFMF I admit I'd had my eye on for a while, but only finally picked it up recently when I noticed it on iTunes for a princely $4.99, extras included - not a reflection on its quality, simply that I don't often actually get around to watching films by myself.

(Zootopia's in the collection as well, but I bought that with my UK account, so it doesn't show in the US purchases. I'm surprised Disney hasn't yet admitted to a sequel, but I suppose it took them a couple years to proceed with - or at least, announce - the continued adventures of Vanellope von Schweetz and Wreck-It Ralph. (Which I'm hoping is better than the trailer suggests.. probably will be, given they've got some fun characters to work with)

Brave I so enjoyed - those early scenes of her private escapades were so joyous, and they did such a wonderful job of making Merida someone you could empathise with so strongly. It's a shame Brenda Chapman wound up ( ... )

Roasting in the heat. ^_^ It was pretty hot today but worse on Monday. On Monday I had a slight migraine and probably as a result, mild smells, like the trash and a fish pond, were cranked up to _stench_. It's bright and sunny today to boot, but I still managed scrape the goat/sheep yard clean (about 40 minutes). Our three eight week-old pigs were swapped for a fresh trio of 16 day old pigs this morning. The wheel keeps on spinning. 8^)
