a moment about bread

Dec 02, 2009 14:25

Just a note before I launch into this particular rave: I don't really like bread. My infatuation with a good croissant, however, is not a passing flirtation, no, it is a fierce white-knuckle fucking love. When I was a child, my parents offered them to me as an ultimate treat, as fulfilling in their way as a the sugary deathbomb ambrosia in the ( Read more... )

I'm obsessive about a croissant!
I agree, I hate the overly crispy and eggwashed variety. Must have a small flake and a good CHEWWWW

Someone gave me a home baked from dough thingy from William Sonoma, I can't remember how exactly it was, but it was better than grocery for sure. Pricey but you can freeze the dough I think

I'm not sure I could ever justify forking over fourty dollars for fifteen criossants unless they were stuffed with truffle. ;) They do sound delish though. Now I'm hungry!

"Most croissants are not up to par. They are substandard, greasy crescents of gluey, papery, crumbling pastry, not worth the hot chocolate it takes to save them. A proper croissant is a treasure, a warm, smooth bread, delicately crunchy to bite into, tender yet satisfying to chew." Absolutely!

Though I rather wish you'd not mentioned this. My nearest decent croissant is ten minutes' walk away - but then I'd have to wait the approx nine hours for the bakery to open tomorrow morning. And right now I am gagging for one.

And did you finally get your fix? I was almost imagining you strolling, squint eyed through the overly bright, back frozen aisle of a twenty four hour grocery store, looking for the ingredients to bake your own.

What a marvellous image! Though I wouldn't trust my oven with the task of croissant production. Actually by the time I woke up I didn't want croissant anymore, but, with the idea still in mind and knowing that Paul, et al were now open, I now wanted to want it. I hadn't realised before that it's possible to crave a craving.

I suspect it is similar to the sadness experienced when declining chocolate cake. "It is so delicious! I should want chocolate cake, but, oh, alas, I do not. Woe."

Thank you for letting me know about it! I must have walked past that bakery easy fifty times and never known it was a place of delicious, hidden delight.

I've never had Kouign-Amann. I'm not sure I'm quite obsessive enough to have someone mail me a slice, though now I've thought of the option, I'm tempted.

I will have to try this place.
I wish I'd paid enough attention to be properly aware of your croissant love. (Though in hindsight it now seems rather obvious.) The bakery that makes the wonderful chocolate mousse cake also makes excellent croissants!
Next time you're here I will have to add to the selection of places you've tried the pastry from.

If the kouign amann is truly delicious, would you mail me a slice? We could start a treat trade.
