I like the way Barack and Michelle are so very obviously in love and not afraid to show it, even after two kids, sixteen years and a stressful presidential campaign together. For months I've seen that as a Good Sign.

Can you imagine how hot that night must have been for them? I can't. Scorch marks, everywhere.

And yes, I agree. As other people have been mentioning, I don't think there's been a couple like them since the Kennedy's.

I like that someone was paid to write that (unlike the sing song poem) porphyre January 22 2009, 21:06:02 UTC

I'm hooked too, even though I'm Canadian. It's really quite something. Without the dire hell that sprouted all this, I wish our politics could be so fascinating.

Ah, the joys of somethingpositive.net. I read it almost religously.

And that third picture is absolutely perfect.

I can't help but think somewhere there's a lighting designer feeling very proud about that photo.

I actually thought that the poem, itself, was quite good and that the problem was with its delivery. The woman is simply not an orator. At all. She's fairly representative of someone who stands and professes endlessly, droning on and on, putting students to sleep. The occasion required someone who could speak to all the newly opened hearts, and she didn't have the pizazz. Some people should stick to publishing. But then they'd have had the problem that surfaced in the Beijing Olympics, where someone was deemed insufficiently cute to appear in person. Unfortunate, all round.

I agree completely porphyre January 23 2009, 17:30:37 UTC
Someone told me she was chosen because she went to school with Obama. Given her "performance" it seems all too likely.

No. No confusion between Elizabeth Alexander and the Love Doctor. Here is an interesting, related discussion on the separation of poetry and state.
