A "data cable" made from stretched nerve cells could someday help connect computers to the human nervous system.Turn off the lights, it's morning, my hair is tangled. Waking up, I'm going to a memorial right across the street for Zayn Ali, found dead only a few blocks away. Either murder or a running jump from his apartment window. I feel like I ( Read more... )

Didn't get to breakfast today, had to sit in a church instead. Now I'm feeling gray.

The newspaper got the name of his brother wrong.

When my grandmother died, the priest got her name and birth state wrong. It's weird how much those kind of things hurt the bereaved.

It didn't strike me, I only knew him peripherally, a few conversations wide. he was a clever boy and I liked him when I saw him, but yes, having the names wrong struck me as a singular faux pas.

I wish you'd been able to stay for more of it. His choir from way back, Sound Sensations, (not having gathered in years, as I understand it) practically blew their lungs out; I don't think I've ever seen a more impressive performance, anywhere. Some of them could barely stand, one girl had to hand off her solo part way through because she was crying too hard. Emotional intensity that you don't really get except in extremis. They sounded fantastic.

An appropriate send-off for one of Vancouver's best and brightest, anyhow. I cried. A lot.

(And the Province didn't just get Zaven's name wrong, they referred to him as "Shemaine's other son Zeyn", a mistake which should never have made it to press.)
