PopSlash and Geocities

Fan History Wiki is trying to preserve the history of PopSlash on Geocities because Geocities is closing down on October 6. Geocities was one of the major early homes to Popslash fandoms like 98 Degrees, NSync, Backstreet Boys and O-Town. When it closes down, we will lose a lot of stories and a lot of history. The Internet Archive is trying to save as much of Geocities as possible. They've set up a special page where you can check if a site is in the archive, and recommend those that aren't for preservation.

If you find a site is on the IA already, please check that the archiving actually goes deep enough to get the stories themselves, and not just the index pages. If not, add the name of the site anyway, and the next pass will hopefully get deep enough to capture everything.

If you could create articles about individual or e-mail support@fanhistory.com with an excel file, word table or csv file with information about popslash stories hosted on Geocities, that would go a long way towards preserving that history. By getting creating articles about stories

I think it's great that people are working so hard to maintain popslash history. But I'm confused about what you're asking -- are you saving the stories, or the summaries of the stories? I've been frustrated many times by trying to access a story only to find the link broken... in which case, the efforts of the Internet Archive mentioned by nopseud will be fantastic.

The stories are not being saved, but rather documented. Those who come back and repost wherever they are hosting their new site can use it as a way to go in, edit, and link to their site to tell other fans that their site has successfully moved, and that it is opened.

It is unfortunate GeoCities is closing. My first website was with them and Yahoo! has no real answer to why they are dropping the handy service while buying up and merging with other companies, including 2 different photo sharing companies. It is as bad as Facebook's recent buy of Frienddfeed. However, it is done, and they are happy. Somehow we have to make the best and save what we can, especially for those sites that have been around and not updated for ages.
