★ Arashi (album)
This is going to be hella long (not helped by the track list already being long itself), so most of my ramblings will be kicked under an LJ-cut. I think most can appreciate that reaching a tenth anniversary is always something admirable and worth celebrating. There have been a lot of tenth anniversaries this year and last, but Japan has certainly gone nuts for 10-year-old-Arashi. Clocking well over a million copies, their tenth anniversary best-of album turns out to be the highest selling album (and CD) for Jpop 2009 (and 34th globally). They also set records for being the only artists to receive the Oricon four crown - #1 in single, album, music DVD and overall sales charts. I've certainly caught the Arashi fever too, albeit very late. I kind of lost my mind last month (Ria was there) and realised maybe there was a reason why I was rewatching AAA08 in Tokyo everyday (Ria pretty much just laughed her head off and got me the DVD as a present <3 What a supporter! XD Cheerleader of all the walks of my fangirl life~ XD). The next order of business was THIS EPIC ALBUM, which I had to get no matter what even though I was months too late. Cost me an arm and leg and now I'm too scared to use it after the first opening. XP As always, this compilation serves as the best thing for newer fans or just those who want to have a listen but don't know where to start. Highly recommended!
There are too many singles and albums for one to get to know all at once, and though I'm slowwwly getting there, All the BEST! is still the vital necessity and cornerstone for one's Arashi-education. :P The regular edition comes in two discs (with a hidden track) and the limited edition comes in three discs (without the hidden track). The first two discs feature all the A-sides in chronological order (minus one Ohno solo A-side), finished off with 5x10, an all encompassing tenth anniversary song-of-all-songs. ♥ The song might appear average initially, but I think the history, meaning, emotion and love is not lost on fans. The lyrics are written by the members, and 5x10 is ultimately a song of gratitude to all fans. I personally love it beyond coherent words. Notable A-sides for me: their debut A.RA.SHI; Kansha Kangeki Ame Arashi; the theme songs for their two movies PIKA☆NCHI & PIKA★★NCHI DOUBLE; Kotoba yori Taisetsu na Mono; Sakura Sake; Hana Yori Dango "trilogy" themes WISH & Love so sweet & One Love; Aozora Pedal; Step and Go; truth; Kaze no Mukou e; Believe. The highlight is without doubt 5x10 and even though I originally hated Attack It!, I now kinda really love it. :D It's fun to listen to. ^^ The third disc, "Arashi's Selection", includes ten hand-picked songs from the members. While most artists would just stop at the A-sides, Arashi's choices are interesting because some of them are really too good to leave out of a tenth anniversary album, and don't deserve to be forgotten just because they aren't A-sides. Plus it's just nice to go beyond A-sides. :) Reading the reasons why they chose each song shows much thought towards fans and how much some of the songs mean to them as well. My favourites: Yes? No?; Oh Yeah!; Arashi marks ARASHI AROUND ASIA 2008 tour theme song Re(mark)able; Still...; Subarashiki Sekai. Overall, a sprinkling of some of Arashi's greatest songs that fans and new listeners can all enjoy, with the most beautiful song dedicated to the fans at the centre of it all. It really is an album worth owning. Opinion is always divided about whether their popularity is overrated or not, but doesn't that always happen? Personally, I love their songs and lyrics, and I loved this album - simple. n_n
Arashi was the biggest thing that happened to me in 2009 since I started paying attention to their past activities, and I apologise for this long post and taking the last entry of 2009. ^^;; Thanks for a great 2009, you guys! Goodbye, 2009! See you all in the next decade! :)
