One thing that's useful to notice about the intertextual references in "The Boat" is that they are all about death by drowning, and many of them about sacrifice or suicide. I would suggest that it is the narrator's way of coming to terms with his father's death and a strong hint that his father killed himself, which is never directly stated in the story.
