I'm sorry to hear about all the collapse going on around you, but glad you took a day off to relax and recharge.
Good news in the laptop front. There's no prohibition against carrying it in your duffel that I'm aware of, though you'll need to verify with the website. Also, every airline I've flown allows each passenger one carry-on and one personal item (they usually give examples of purse, briefcase, diaper bag).
I tote my purse, laptop, big insulated cup, reading materials, snacks, and camera (in it's carrying case, even) in my backpack. As long as it fits under the seat in front of me - which it does, lying down - they've never cared what I brought. (I used to use a canvas shopping bag the size of a brown paper shopping bag, and nobody said 'boo' to that, either.)
As a bonus with this method, if they ask for volunteers for plane-side bag check I still have access to my laptop in case the muse strikes. (I'll happily let them throw my carry-on in the cargo hold as long as I get it back at the next stop. When they insist

I really needed a day to just relax :)
Do you think a tote bag would work? I do have a bag I use for my computer, but it's pretty bulky - lots of pockets/panels. Might be a pain in the butt to carry around in addition to my duffel bag... I can't remember how much space there is below the seat and whether it'll fit. If I use a tote bag, it'd be pretty easy to slide it out during security.
Thank you ♥ Both for the help and for the good trip wishes!
Thanks bb :( I can't really say I'm surprised - we were due for something bad to happen (something bad happens every couple of months to us), it just sucks that so much went wrong.
Everyone carries on laptops all the time... I've carried on two, on a rare occasion.
If you have a carry-on duffel, you're also allowed a 'personal' item... so you can have a small laptop bag... think of it as an oversize purse, one that you can put under the seat in front of you. So the duffel goes in the overhead and the smaller bag goes under the seat in front of you.
You're not going to need to turn it on, but you need to take it out of any bag you pack it in to get through security. Which is why you want a smaller bag of some sort (a backpack of some sort) for the laptop... and if you can stick your purse in the backpack, that makes managing the bags easier.
Does that make sense?
PS -- and all your liquid and semi-liquid things (shampoo, hand lotion, etc) need to be in a clear quart sized bag that you can take out of your bags... leave the shampoo at home and either use the stuff in the hotel or pick up something small at the store when you get in.
I don't fly often and this is the first time I've considered bringing my laptop, and I'm so nervous XD My laptop is my baby!
I'm thinking I might store my laptop in a tote bag. It'll be easy to slip out during security but easy enough to carry. I do have this bag that I use as a computer bag, but it's pretty bulky, and carrying that and my duffel bag might be too much. I could probably fit my purse in there, too.
That does make sense, and thank you so much for reminding me about the liquid things. I'll have to make a note to buy travel sized shampoo/conditioner/etc. Though I suppose I could just ask someone to take me to Walmart or something once I'm down there...
I hate that you have had such a crappy time. I can't believe all that happened in a week! But I know How that goes. I hope your 'new' car will be reliable. I'm glad to hear that you got some rest today and that you're feeling up to writing. Definitely will check out the story. I'm like you, 99.99% of what I read is mcshep. The occasional gen or other pairing must be really good to warrant my time.
Very glad to hear also, that you're going to Squee Weekend. Where and when is it? I'd recommend that you get a separate something for your laptop and keep it with you. As elderwitty said 2 carry-ons are permitted. I'd rather you not get your laptop jarred, banged, around or crunched by someone else's shit in the overhead storage. I've traveled a lot by air in the last 10 years and back in the day, my parents flew me and #5 out to visit a couple of times a year and he took his violin (in a soft case!) with no probs. good luck! Lots of hugs!
It really has been a terrible week. I'm trying not to let it get me down. Hopefully I have the story done, lol. I'm hoping to work on some of it tonight. Yeah, I'm VERY picky about my gen fic lol.
Squee Weekend is October 5th to October 12th, though you can stay for a shorter time if you wish (I'll be staying Oct 6th to 10th), and it's held in Greensville, South Carolina.
I'm planning on bringing a tote bag to carry my laptop, since I know it'll be small enough to fit under the seat. I have a bag I use as a computer bag, but it's pretty bulky. I'd rather avoid my laptop getting smashed by other people's bags, too - not to mention if I store my laptop in my duffel bag, which I put in the storage compartment, then I'll have to dig it out once the plane is in the air lol.
Thank you for soothing my fears XD It helps to get advice from seasoned fliers!
Thank you for the dates. Probably won't be able to attend, but I really wish I could. All my LJ friends will be there. I'm delighted your story is coming along and I'm really glad so many people had good advice for traveling.

You should verify it via your airline's website, though, because it's been almost a year since I've flown.
You're welcome!
