I can honestly say I have never used any of those "excuses" since I reached puberty.
Mind you, I still have done some "terrible" things on occasion, but I've usually inflicted most (if not all) of the damage on myself… and when I have hurt someone else I go to great lengths to fix what I've done.
It's nice that the author is mostly aware of how he can do better in his interactions. I think I'd still hate to be his kids, though.
Basically, when it comes to other people, all you have to do is acknowledge what they're feeling. Nothing gets people to calm down faster or to get on your side as much as just letting them know that you understand and accept their emotions.
Which isn't to say that they have the right to behave badly because of what they feel; just that they have the right to whatever they're feeling. :)
