I'm not sure what we're calling POC these days, so I'm not sure if my suggestion would count, but:

Mom's reccomendations:
Rudolfo Anaya's Bless Me Ultima (great Native American/Mexican, caused quite a stir in CA right now)
Toni Morrison
The Elephant Vanishes Haruki Marakami

My suggestion:
some of all the Holy Books out there from the Eastern Hemisphere maybe?

I have read Bless Me, Ultima, in school, and I loved it bunches. :D

Since I read holy texts as separate from pleasure reading, they're probably not going in here, though.

Upon thinking a bit more...you should totally add Audre Lorde's Zami to your list if you haven't read it already. It's lovely and poignant and sexy and...yeah. Tasty, tasty readings.

I recommend:

Tanith Lee:
The Silver Metal Lover
Metallic Love
Biting the Sun

Robert Heinlein:
The Moon is a Harsh Mistress
For Us, The Living
(well, anything by RAH!)

I think, respectfully, that you may have missed the point of the assignment. :D But I do thank you for taking the time.

If you're looking for more POC sci-fi it wouldn't hurt to check out Samuel R. Delany. Neveryona is a good one and I really owe it to myself to attempt Dahlgren again.

I hear good things about Delany, but no one had recced anything specific. Thanks!

There's also Stars In My Pockets Like Grains Of Sand that gets into a whole bunch of genderfuckery. The narrative skips all over the place, but if you've got the attention span and drive to hold the man down it's a good story.

See, I don't mind skipping around narrative. Win.

Good choice on the Mishima there! I love his work. Have you read any Yasunari Kawabata? He was Mishima's mentor and a Nobel Prise winner.
