Poor skill: making your own body wax

I found this article on on craftster yesterday about "sugaring". Because I was so bored at work I read through the ENTIRE thread. I found that some of the tips were really useful but I don't suggest sitting there reading this thread for an hour unleses you really have nothing else to do. ;)

Anywho, it really does work. I made some when I got home ( Read more... )

I have never gotten waxed at a salon but I have used at-home microwave wax before. I found this sugar wax to be a lot easier. The at home microwave wax flaked and didn't come off in uniform pieces in my experience but this stuff did. It only hurt by my bikini area but I guess it depends on pain tolerance.

Did it hurt less than at home waxing or was it just more convenient?

To me it hurt less but that is probably because I could pull off the entire piece of wax at once instead of having to peel off little specs that stuck or broke away from the big piece. I used to use microwavable SurgiWax from the drug store and it always did that to me. So annoying!

I never knew that either until I saw some of the things that other people were using: dishtowels, cut up denim, old sweatpants etc. I think the only restriction is don't use a fabric that is too stretchy.

I used a large dinner napkin and left it whole.

bah it's still waxing. i remember watching a tom hanks movie where this girl and her family had a strange balled up substance and rubbed it on their legs. i thought that'd be a fun way to wax.

Yeah it is still waxing, there is no way to get around that. It will cost me a lot less to buy a bag of sugar and a bag of lemons vs. venus razorblades, shaving cream and nair for various parts of myself though.

hah. It figures that the razor companies were the ones to come up with the "ladies should shave their legs" rule so they could sell more blades...stick it to 'em!! :)

Haha yeah really!! Now they sell all kinds of stuff to go along with razors too. Shaving cream (obviously), hair preventing lotions, lotions to get rid of ingrown hairs, etc etc. Not to mention they come out with new razors that are basically the same but cost so much more every few months. I mean look at the stupid Venus razor - did they really need to make a billion different versions?? They all work exactly the same in my opinion.

actually, the venus razor is the only i have ever used that didn't give me ingrown hairs or make my legs itch. the vibrating one is the best razor i have ever used - completely smooth, no nicks, no ingrown hairs and i don't need shaving cream.

That little cultural thing goes way back to before the middle ages, actually.

Hair, or maturity really, on woman is EVIL. EVE. Evil. And all that noise...

I used to do this, finally decided I preferred shaving, but it does work pretty well. The trick is to always skew towards under-done, because you can always heat it up again if you've missed the heat point you needed to hit, but you can't fix it if you've turned the pot of it into hard candy. ;)

Yep that's exactly what I did. I undercooked it at first because I was worried I would ruin my pot. I took it out of the pot, let it cool to test it, decided to reheate it and cooked it for a little bit more. It came out great after the reheat. Oh yeah and you can reheat it in the microwave in short bursts (30 secs, stir, repeat) too. That is super convenient.
