You can try just cleaning it with water and towels. Saturate the stain with water, then take a towel folded several times and stand on it to remove as much water as possible. It make take several towels and several dousings with water, but it's a good first try.

I got a stain like that out of my carpet that my husband "forgot" to clean for several days while I was out of town.

what is water spotting?

(I'm not stupid, honest, I just don't make messes. I vaccum twice a week and clean any spills immediately. I also drink mostly water, so up until now the spills were only water.) I spill tons of things on me, but very little on my furniture or floor.

beware though. we live in a rental and our carpet was crap when we moved in. we recently bought this and used it when the dog peed on the carpet (grr). it works SO well that now that spot is completely clean and white and stands out in our dirty old rest of the carpet. hah.

Depends what your landlord is like. If he or she is fairly reasonable, try to save your deposit. Otherwise, clean it but don't bust your butt over it. Laws usually favor landlords, and it wouldn't be worth taking him to court over if you'd thought you'd done a good enough job and he didn't, so it may be one of those "do your best but don't hope for much" moments.

My landlords are really cool and I don't see them nickel and diming me over stuff provided I try to take care of things. They rent primarily in low income neighborhoods and while it shouldn't be true, they are used to people who are inconsiderate. These guys put in brand new windows for me and even came over to hang a bathroom cabinet I picked up for cheap and wanted put up. :)

try baking soda and vinegar. sprinkle the baking soda over the spot, wet it down, and then put vinegar over it so it'll foam. blot up with a towel- the baking soda should do wonders for helping the stain come out.

i've used it to get some pretty stubborn stains out, but never on carpets, so YMMV. i don't really use chemical/mainstream cleaners because i'm very sensitive to chemicals, so this would probably be a good bet for a baby-safe cleanser. it's worth a shot!
