I explained the situation better. I swerved to avoid hitting a car that stopped suddenly in front of me and I hit a tree instead and the offender drove away. I'm tired...so when i wrote this I wan't thinking very straight.
Is there a rideshare program in your area? We have one in my city, and it's kind of the same idea as carpooling except you're riding with strangers (however, everyone needs to get to the same area, so I guess that is something they have in common?)
if there is no rideshare program, then how bike friendly is where you live? Of course, I don't know how far you live from work, so a bike might not be an option. If it helps, I live a half hour away from work (driving time) and have biked there before with no problems (obviously it takes longer though).
To add to the bike thing, maybe your transport system has a bikes on buses option. My local one does, which improves the shifty service by being able to bike from the stops to the destination.. or bike on the return trip when the buses stop running.
Can't do the bike thing because I have to get on 95 to get there or another major road that connects to 95. Too dangerous:(
I live in DE and have to communte to PA where my job is, I would have to take too many buses to do the bike thing, and I would never make it to work on time.
I have to communte to Delaware COunty, PA which is where I just moved from. I have a job already, I'm just out on maternity leave. No all my coworkers live in PA. This is what I was doing, chipping in for gas and getting rides in between taking the bus.
I will look into the woman's shelter thing, I didn't think of that either.
I don't actually live in Middletown anymore, I was born and raised in DE, mostly Middletown...now I'm in North Dakota for another year, but hopefully we're moving back to DE after that...if you still want to friend me though, feel free:-)
Random tidbit since you're new to the area and probably not aware of it--if you can't find a program to help you and if you decide to go the used car from a private seller route once you've got a source of funding the purchase, there's this classified paper thing, I think it comes out weekly, called The Swapper. Wawa's carry it, I don't know who else. My dad has a bad Swapper habit, always picking it up and buying things he didn't know he "needed" until he saw the ad:-P But anyway, good source for lots of used car ads in addition to regular newspaper classifieds. It costs something, but it's less than a dollar I'm pretty sure.
When my boyfriend's last car broke down, he donated it to a vocational school who fixed it up and gave it to charity. I can't remember the name of the charity, but it seems like it's a lot like 800 Charity Cars. It's not for parents, but for anyone struggling financially.

I'm in AL, and a co-worker of mine received his car in this manner after the birth of his second child and the loss of his only vehicle.
