Food or Lewd?

Alright, seeing as we know a diverse group of people, I'm going to put this question out there in the wind. Is breast feeding in public offensive? This question just came up in one of my classes (Child Development) on Wednesday. So, what do you think? I'm looking for everyone's honest opinion here. Have fun!

Well, my obviously biased opinion is that it is not at all offensive. It is a well-documented fact that breast feeding is better for your baby than bottle feeding, but, unfortunately, a lot of women stop breast feeding too soon because of the stigma that is attached to doing it in front of other people. Women should be free to decide the manner in which to nourish their infants and if they choose to breast feed they should not be punished for it. The idea that it is wrong to breast feed in public seems to derive from the assumption that women who have babies should stay home and take care of them as well as from male insistence on viewing the breast as a purely sexual object, while refusing to acknowledge its other crucial function. Both of these notions are unjust and serve to undermine the social status of women. Our society needs to get over its prudish hang-ups and let women feed their children. Isn't the baby's health and well-being more important than our personal discomfort?

Not that I'd given the subject a lot of thought, or

My thoughts exactly. It's just so helpful for the child to breast feed, it really shouldn't be questioned. I've thought about it so much lately, and its the most likely reason why it seems everyone is an allergy ridden zombie these days, doped up on more pills than anyone could imagine. That's just one of the several reasons why women need to nurse their children for at least the first 6 months. People need to get over themselves and stop acting so prudish. It is a natural and important part of a baby's development, and if you're so easily offended then you can just look away.

I don't think it's offensive. Perfectly natural and necessary thing to do when you have children. The body makes the milk especially for the offspring. It's like trying to deny your animal instincts, because society says so. Typical id versus superego battle.

Truth is that it is natural but the thing is that people tend to make a big deal out of it due to the fact that some people think that it is gross. to some people yes but it really makes the difference with whom you are talking to.
