Ok, last weekend I was in NYC and went to the Saturday matinée of Les Miserables. I sat in the front of the Mezzanine, which were surprisingly good seats. Immediately I opened my Playbill to discover that Lea salonga was not going to be performing. Needless to say, I was PISSED. Anyways, I calmed down when the show started. The show was Amazing ( Read more... )

Sorry to hear you didn't get Lea. I've had shows (not Les Mis, since the last time Les Mis was in Australia I had no idea what it was), where I've gone particularly to see someone in a role (after seeing the show 3 times without this performer) and been lucky enough to actually have him on, though I would imagine how incredibly frustrating it would be if I still had the understudy on.

Max Von Essen, I haven't heard in Les Mis, but I've seen a video of him doing 'Proud Lady' from the Baker's Wife, it was okay, but nothing excellent. I much prefer the OLC guy, even tho no one knows who he is.

Kahlo Shimada, I don't really like on the CSR, but there's a video of her on YouTube doing 'On My Own' in Japanese and it's so beautiful. It moved me to tears and I have never cried at 'On My Own'. You should check it out if you haven't seen it already.

Based on your description, Mandy Bruno seems interesting, a mixture of a more mature take on Eponine and the teenybopper's view.

Nikki didn't replace Lea; she's still an understudy and Lea is still in the cast. She was sick for about three performances last weekend.

I would love to tell you that Lea was not good as Fantine but once again Lea strikes us with a beautiful portrayal of a character and an amazing vocals. I'm really surprised you didn't like Max. He was AMAZING as Enjolras when I saw him. My favorite by far! And I love Gary Beach although I can see why people wouldn't. I agree with you on most of the others. Pretty much feel the same way with Mandy. Wasnt blown over but still a strong performance. I like Ann as Mme. Theinardier. Not as much as Jenny. I dont get what you mean by too asian. I think it doesnt matter what race you are. I don't know if you have seen Kaho Shimada but she is one of the best. If you havent seen her dont judge her by the CSR. If you have seen her then I respect your opionion but if you haven't- well...

Thanks for the review. I wish I was still in NYC so I could see the new cast. Your description of Mandy's Eponine forces me to soften my criticism on her. Her acting sounds better than what I had expected. Sorry you didn't see Lea.
