Yeah, it's coming up on time to re-read Downbelow Station yet again (it's been more than 10 years since the last time)! But then I'd want to read the rest of the books in that 'verse...
War for the Oaks was the first "urban fantasy" I ever read; it changed the way I looked at fantasy fiction (before then, I had categorized it as too medieval for my taste). But yeah, I concede your point about Prince. ;)
I don't know if i read 'War' or 'Borderlands' first...hrmmm...both were very cool urban fantasies. I think that i was 'unsuprised' by them because the medieval 'knights and drangons' fantasy had started to bore me long before that. I do remember a book called 'The Dragon and the George' about a soldier finding himself in a 'castle' kind of time/place and i think near the end he somehow got his buddies and semi-automatic rifles in to fight the bad guy? Heh. I just remember i copied the cover in my art class and it was a fun kind of Boris/Frazetta painting to do.
Dr. Scott! :) Hee! If I'd have been allowed ten titles, RHPS probably would have made that list. :)
I am a HUGE fan of musicals! I practically grew up on them -- they're what led me to study film in college (well, that and romantic comedy). They've influenced me in a lot of ways; I credit the 30's Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers for kick-starting my love for art deco, which led to my passion for architecture and interior design.
It was tough to pick just one Cherryh (I love the Kif series, too!), but Downbelow Station got the nod because it was the first one of hers that I read, and it rocked my world.
I highly recommend the Panshin, too, if you haven't read it, and it makes an excellent thirteenth birthday present for any child with brains and an open mind (I've given it to several kids I know).

War for the Oaks is fun, too, although methinks she likes Prince just a BIT too much...

Man, I remember The Dragon and the George! It was fun to see the cliches of medieval fantasy genre turned sideways. :)

So, you're a musical fan, huh? The only one I watch regularly is RHPS. Rocky!
