33. I was born a house cat

I realize that attempting to find logic to anything that happens in this place is probably fruitless, but has anybody been able to discern any rhyme or reason behind who gets ears and who does not?

[A pause as he flicks back through the journal.]Juliet suspects there may be a deeper reason, but I cannot for the life of me figure out what it is. ( Read more... )

I do not have them, but Reed does.

Very strange. I wonder if all the people who have ears have something in common?

I think they might, likewise with the people lacking ears.

I'm trying to remember the last time when only one of Reed or myself was part of some such event...

I am wondering something similar- have we ever had a strange occurrence where it seemed to be more selective than usual?

I don't have them either, do you?

No, I do not.

Quite possibly. At least this is harmless.

It really is strange. These things seem more like a decoration than anything else--I can't hear anything with the ears--but they're very much attached and part of us.

They seem to have a mind of their own, too.

So they are functional in every way except hearing? Very odd, though I suppose it would be overwhelming to have two sets of ears, especially sensitive ones like a cat's.

Yeah, they behave just like a cat's ears and tail. [Even down to indicating his mood, something that irritates him a little.]

It makes as much sense as any of this does, I guess--though I am glad not to suddenly have to deal with hearing everything two different ways.

Yes, I suppose trying to make sense of this is pointless.

I have them, but they're torn and notched. [She looks like she's been in a fight. And she thinks it's really weird-looking.]

Really? I wonder if anybody else's are like that?

The others I've seen are all neat and whole. [There was someone with a missing tip, but still, neater than hers.] It's probably got something to do with the scars in my scalp.

It could be. Perhaps they try to match one's appearance as much as possible.
