The pedantic answer is of course: you get them from a hickory tree.
They're certainly in the same family as walnuts and pecans. The meat looks a lot like a slightly miniature pecan, with a flavor similar to a pecan but with a slight bit of the astringency of a walnut.
There are two guys that sell them at the Madison Farmer's Market. Their prices are very different, so make sure you find both of the guys before you buy. You can also find them online.
Shipping to Minneapolis (or anywhere) would be problematic. But you will be at Musecon, I know. I could deliver the goods then if you like. Getting it home would be your own affair. And since it is one of The Flavors Of the Month, there's no need to order a whole batch unless you actually want that much.
Once is a fluke, twice is a coincidence, and three times is enemy action. So a tasting at Musecon 3 would indeed be enemy action (Since I've done it at the previous two). Which is sort of an apt description; because while I haven't actually asked this particular hotel, hotels in general frown on Outside Food Events. I would be delighted to take bribes in aid of influencing toward of having particular flavors at such a tasting at Musecon. Such a tasting usually happens outside the Blinkie/Fiber room on the second floor on Saturday afternoon, and is not formally scheduled because see above re frowny hotels.
