Well, duh. "Abortion and Reproductive Rights" is a platform item of NOW, and they and Palin have opposing views on abortion. How could they back her on the ticket? By endorsing early they are in effect saying they have no political gain to make in holding it back any more, so they are cashing in the chip for Obama (was that ever in doubt?). My guess is they were holding out to see whether McCain would name a pro-choice fiscal conservative to the ticket and then use their withheld endorsement as a lever to push the McCain camp to at least drop anti-choice points from its strategy.

Exactly. I think they thought it was important to stress that a woman candidate is not necessarily a women's candidate.
