I've been using Arch for a bit now. It's nice and minimal if I want it that way, has a decent packaging system, and things on it work. The net install cd isn't large either; but you may not have the bandwidth we do in Finland (I mean, funet is _next door_ and I get 2k+/sec downloads from there, it's not like reading from the CD/DVD is faster.
Anyway, not to say "try this one" unless you're in the mood to try something. If you had a faster machine (I assume based on your past discussions you don't) with more memory I'd suggest vmware for testing stuff out, but, well actually it'll run just fine on whatever you've got, as will qemu. So, ya know, give 'em a whirl _IF_ you feel like adventuring in that area.

Since this post I downloaded PC-BSD, which I liked OK but it was acting really strange with DHCP. So I downloaded the netinst of actual Debian and just finished getting that installed. Sound didn't work, but I found a patch on the ALSA bug tracker that fixed it mostly (the sound hardware on this laptop is new and not yet supported).
Not sure I'm liking Gnome. I've only used KDE from way back.
