So far today:

  • Installed Ubuntu in the spare space on the laptop hard drive.
  • (I don't like it, I think. Might try switching to straight Debian. I'm not invested in the install on the laptop at this point.)
  • Took everything out from under the kitchen sink. Disassembled the drains. cleaned out all the pieces. Reassembled. Got to the bottom of the "disposal not ( Read more... )

Also, sorry about the Spaghetti-O's I rinsed into the disposal. I was tired and forgot it wasn't working until afterwards. Now...back to work for me.

I would have been just as productive if you were here; these things have been piling up for a while...Especially the drain thing. And I do just as much laundry when you're here.

I don't care for Ubuntu either, or Debian based bits - though I've spent more time with them lately with the Xen installs. Debian is growing on me a BIT.

I've been using Arch for a bit now. It's nice and minimal if I want it that way, has a decent packaging system, and things on it work. The net install cd isn't large either; but you may not have the bandwidth we do in Finland (I mean, funet is _next door_ and I get 2k+/sec downloads from there, it's not like reading from the CD/DVD is faster.

Anyway, not to say "try this one" unless you're in the mood to try something. If you had a faster machine (I assume based on your past discussions you don't) with more memory I'd suggest vmware for testing stuff out, but, well actually it'll run just fine on whatever you've got, as will qemu. So, ya know, give 'em a whirl _IF_ you feel like adventuring in that area.

Well, what I don't like about Ubuntu is the "no no, dear...no touch! You're not qualified...." stuff. basically, there seems to be no easy way under the hood to fix things if they're not right.

Since this post I downloaded PC-BSD, which I liked OK but it was acting really strange with DHCP. So I downloaded the netinst of actual Debian and just finished getting that installed. Sound didn't work, but I found a patch on the ALSA bug tracker that fixed it mostly (the sound hardware on this laptop is new and not yet supported).

Not sure I'm liking Gnome. I've only used KDE from way back.

the "OMG! You touched your menu file! THE WORLD WILL END!" stuff is EXACTLY why I hate Debian based distros (like eeew bunt eeew.) I have news for them: I am qualified. And I'll BET I'm more qualified than a lot of their group 'approving' things ( ... )
