I couldn't help but smile at his enthusiasm, though I was too nervous to share it. "I'm ready," I said. I clasped his hand as we headed out to wherever we were going to learn. I assumed it would be the beach. Clear sight lines; less of a likelihood that I'd accidentally hit someone.

Yes, it had been a good idea to make new target circles. The complaints about what happened to the old ones had been loud. These looked thick. They should stand up to shotgun shells, shouldn't they?

When Zell asked me if I was ready, I looked at him. I wanted to make Zell proud of me, so I drew myself up and gave him a smile as I nodded. "Yes." As I'll ever be, anyway.

I stood ready for the weapon.
