Don't cry, emo lawyer, don't cry.

Okay. I have no idea where this came from. It is full of ANGST and it made me get all teary-eyed so I hope it does the same for you.

“Jamie, please don’t cry.”
She had already started. “Don’t go…” Her hand gripped his arm tightly. “…please don’t go.”
“You know I have no choice.” Jack’s voice was hoarse as he held her close to him.
“Stay,” she pleaded. “We can fight this-you and me together, we can.”
He leaned in, his forehead against hers. “You know if I thought it would work, if I thought there was a chance in hell that one of us wouldn’t end up dead…I wouldn’t let them do this.”

“I could go with you,” Jamie said. “You wouldn’t have to be alone, we could see each other…”

“And what about Katie?” Jack reminded her.

Remembering her daughter, knowing there was no way it could work, she held onto him tighter for the few moments she was still be able to do so.

Two men in black suits came in just then. “Mr. McCoy? We’re ready.”

Jack lowered his head slightly to kiss her, and there they remained until the men began to remind him that they needed to leave.

Jamie looked at the suits, accusingly. “How long…will he be there?”

The suits were unfeeling. “Until Cagnolini is no longer a threat. Once he’s dead or in prison.”

“How long is that?” Her voice had become a whisper.

“Could be days or weeks…” The second suit shrugged. “Could be years.”

Jack gently detached himself from her, tears in his eyes. “I have to go.”
She nodded, knowing that clinging, prolonging the process would only make it worse. “I’ll be here…when you get back.”

He gave her a small half smile. “I wouldn’t want it any other way.”

Before either of them could say anything else, the Feds began ushering their newest protected witness out of the DA’s office.

From the door, Jamie watched McCoy’s figure become smaller as they went down the hall, then as they got onto the elevator, disappear entirely for who knew how long.
