She always believed he would come back.
I was a kid, and even I’d stopped pretending he so much as cared.
Mom, though…she thought he was Lancelot, merely on his quest for Camelot. He could return at any moment on his noble steed with silk dresses for her, a fortune for the family. Wealth would be restored.
I knew the truth. Even though I didn’t really know the truth until earlier this spring…somewhere deep down, I knew he wasn’t coming back. He didn’t leave anything to come back for. If we were worth it, he never would have left.
But she kept believing he was still her savior and she fed Karen the candy-coated lies too. She would dress up and wait for him. Her best dress-it was in style when we lived out in the ‘burbs, but that had been over two years ago-was already faded and out of fashion, but she couldn’t afford anything else. She was still telling herself she lived in that world too. Our digs in Brooklyn were “temporary” till Daddy came back.
She would wait in that damn blue dress with the big shoulder pads. Curled hair, painted nails, the works. After awhile, Karen would ask where Daddy was. She’d started dressing up too, in her old Easter dress, the only one of her fancy dresses left that still fit her. It had been mine, before hers, and I was glad to hand it down.
Mom would go to the other room, get on the phone, dial the operator, wait a few moments, mumble something into the phone and come back out, all smiles.
“Daddy couldn’t make it after all, sweetie,” she’d tell Karen.
The excuses would vary-the train was late, the office needed him. Karen never questioned-what office? What train?
I think they both still believe he’s coming back.
I still haven’t told them.
