Actually medical tourism is getting to be a big business. Lot's of people in the U.S. are finding out that its a lot cheaper and often just as safe to have procedures done overseas. And we're not just talking cosmetic stuff here, we're talking orthopedic surgeries and major dental procedures. ACA may eliminate some of the reasons that patients might choose this (e.g. pre-existing conditions, running into spending maxes) but now some insurance companies are offering this as an option as well.
Ironic, considering that insurance is the reason health care is so expensive here. The insurance companies are desperate to get their fingers in the pie any way they can.
There's a new treatment for hepatitis C that can fully cure most patients in three months. But it costs $1000 a day in the US. You can buy the same drug for $10 a day in Cairo...
