What about free trade and the comparative advantages of having dirty things made in countries where labor is cheaper and environmental/labor regulations are more lax. Before a self-evident policy of free trade, manufacturing in the US was just a cost of doing business. After that, all the grungy, gritty, dangerous jobs simply poured out to Asia and South America.

Quite a cosmology you've got there.

I strongly object to this cartoon. The modern necktie did not exist in 1842. The shirt and jacket are all wrong too.
