Bullshit, you can cram at least 9 people in a phone booth.
Your rep sounds like a real turd. I can understand the fear about the town hall meetings though, thanks to mis-information and the inability of people to shut their traps and control their outrage for tiny amounts of time to actually LISTEN to the issue at hand, it's become almost impossible for people to discuss without being heckled.
Plus, the screening of the people actually takes away the authenticity of the meeting. Until people can discuss like adults and clear up misunderstandings then maybe the whole thing should be locked away.
The problem is that this should be a town hall meeting. In other words, it should be entirely the public telling the government what they want in the bill. The politicians using these as some sort of sales opportunity to sell a bill that NOBODY wants are just asking for trouble.
Now, if they would table this bill, spend the time from now until Congress reconvenes to actually ask the constituents what they want, and then write a bill to actually do those things, well, that would be democracy.
I don't know if I necessarily blame them. I know the play book says put the heat on the seat of power, belittle and embarrass them, but the really loud elements within the conservative circles have taken it took far and congressmen don't have to hold town hall meetings. Maybe they're chicken-shit, or maybe they just don't want to deal with a Mob creature who can't see or hear and just makes noise.
Also, online forums with video chat rooms! If PBS can make a quality watch it now system, the bloody government can make a town-hall like forum that works online.
