Some people have made arguments that if there were better gun control the mass murder at Virginia Tech wouldn't have happened. I've also heard that if people were allowed to carry weapons they would have been able to defend themselves against the killer. I disagree with both arguments. The issue of guns is a red herring. There's no evidence that

and/or health care, especially in the mental health fields are terribly underfunded and many people can't afford therapy or get proper treatment due to lack of funds, and so problems deepen and remain unaddressed. also there is still an element of shame attached to mental health problems, even though they are so common. people are expected to pop a prozac and get on with it.
