They've finally managed to break into the chest that they'd raided from the locked cell on the Brightfame], and Archie and Wellard are busily setting out the contents on the table in Jack's cabin. Among the contents are some beautifully made pieces -- a miniature psalmbook bound in jeweled gold; an elaborately-worked poison-ring with a very tiny alabaster figurine of a cat under the signet where the poison should be; a gold torque inlaid with lapis lazuli; a statue of a winged man, carved in jade.Others are less obviously valuable, but peculiarly interesting: a shining silver hip-flask that can't be opened; a clay tablet with strange triangular markings; a bit of porphyry cloth frayed at the edges and wrapped with a ribbon of woven silver; a small ivory cube, intricately carved and containing a seamless crystal sphere; a heavy book bound in strange leather and whose pages are blank.Some are just strange: a rook's skull, all bleached white bone and hollow-eyed watchful sockets; a gleaming black feather; a miniature tapestried ( ... )
