That's a very apathetic attitude to take. In the US, these people are taking over the government. Australia is only a decade or so behind. Apathism may have worked in the past, but the time will come when we all have to confront these issues.

In the materialist scheme of things, everyone is a victim and no one can be held accountable for his or her actions.

I have to take exception to this. I see it the other way round. Materialists are forced to accept that they must be accountable for their actions, unless they wish to deny that they're sentient. Materialists have nothing to fall back on. Theists can always say "the devil made me do it" or "it was God's will", but non-theists have to take personal responsibility for their own life.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Religion is just a way of prolonging childhood.

Well, there are arguments both ways. A purely mechanistic view of brain function can lead to a conclusion that no one is truly responsible for their actions; that a combination of childhood trauma, brain chemistry and stimuli can acount for a person's actions to the extent that they cannot be considered responsible ( ... )
