In the next room Ailz and Damian are talking about scrap metal. Lead, says Damian used to have real value, now, because it's toxic, it has none. This, I suppose,  is good news for churches and other historical buildings with roofs which won't be worth stealing any longer ( Read more... )

Years ago, one of the Big Churches put in an entire drainage system (eaves trough and all) made of copper. It was gorgeous and shiny and lasted about a week before it was stolen.

Oh, non-ferrous metal like copper is quite sought after for many years already, and pays a good penny if you show up with a good mass of it...

Hm, probably that is because electromobility is such a big thing these days.
All potential material to create batteries for such vehicles may be sought after.

Lead has lost its value, but if it comes down to certain tasks, there is still totally NO way around it. For castors that shall store and transport radioactive waste from nuclear power plants or anything else that shall protect against radiation (think of the lead aprons when getting x-rayed).
Somehow, lead does a safe job here to not let it reach through.

I understand that if you want to buy lead it's quite expensive, even though the market for scrap lead has all but disappeared.
