Excrement does have some limited uses. For example, for some organisms, it can be food; for others, it can become dowries for their maggots. And, of course, there is the ever-popular use of feces as an ointment used to roll in in order to raise one's annoyance factor inside the house to astronomical levels, as is true of certain breeds of dogs

Not that there really needs to be a prime motivator (especially not during one of our extended political campaign seasons), but did anything in particular bring this on?

No, I was just in a fey mood. One of those stream-of-consciousness bits that was just too weird not to memorialize. One of my favorite humorous writers is Robert Benchley, grandfather of Peter Benchley (the latter is the author of Jaws). A snippet of this suddenly popped into mind, and I began turning it over and over, trying to figure out how best to use it. The result is as you see here. :-)
