SONY went to Obama, who left them hanging. SONY doesn't want to take on the liability of theaters being attacked, and believe that North Korea is crazy enough to do it.
If Obama and the US had stepped in, maybe they would have pulled it, but a Corporation is not going to go this on its own. Also, Japan is trying very hard to rehabilitate its image with the two Korea's, and SONY is a Japanese company. So again, more reason to just back down and give in, in order to protect the people who go to see their movies.
I can't really blame SONY at this point, they've been cut off and left to fend for themselves.

Actually, Sony said that the theaters didn't want to show the film, so Sony did not release it to them.
