I've never had these type of fish but when I've considered it, I have always wanted to get a large aquarium. It just seems like a good idea, bigger space for them. I guess lots of ornaments too.

This is pretty funny though but poor things!

I once rented a room from someone who had these two GINORMOUS goldfish in a tank that wasn't exactly cramped, but it wasn't all that big, not for them. And they had little in that tank to keep them occupied, no castles or other toys, no pretty pebbles, a minimum of pond weed, no other fish, nada. But they did like to watch TV. Their tank was in the living room, and if the color TV was on, they'd crowd over in that part of the tank nearest to it and follow the action avidly. There was a chair next to the tank, and I'd sit in and look at this or that, and that's how I found out they were critics: if I had something on they didn't like, they'd use their tails to flip water into my lap. They liked I Love Lucy. They most ardently did not like Heehaw (the latter got five drownings up). Carp (goldfish) are more than intelligent enough to work out a pidgin by which to communicate with us, which means they're intelligent enough to get bored and unhappy when they have too little to interest them.

Depends on the fish, and how many of each kind are in a tank of a given size. Too many fish ==> too little oxygen ==> fights, deaths, ick.

like any animal, hidey holes, toys, and attention make them happy. Fish will play with a ball, rub against their environment, get used to a routine...

PETA using this study to try to outlaw aquariums as cruel to fish countdown... 3... 2... 1...

PETA will use just any damn thing to push their idiots agenda. Anything. From the King James Bible to the New York City telephone directory, and everything in between.

The study itself is interesting because it discusses the behavior of fish, and I'm very interested in animal behavior. I remember those two goldfish of Benny's throwing water into my lap to get me to change channels from Hee-Haw to I Love Lucy, and if they were that bored, experimentation with a larger tank and more fish toys in there would have been in order. Which doesn't mean PETA is right. PETA is so fuckin' wrong they'll never straighten out. I recommend ballistic lead poisoning for them.
