I don't think that's necessary to explain why the near side of the moon has less cratering. The presence of the Earth shielded the near side, possibly during the Late Heavy Bombardment, but the far side had no such protection.

I don't think HuffPo understands the value of scientific debate. To them, either one argument or another must be right, or at least highly significant, and all else should be ignored. This new theory is just one more to come along to try to explain certain odd features of the lunar landscape. It will be tested, and I predict that most of it will eventually fail, but even in failing, it will provide thrust for ongoing investigations and modification of models that could be extremely valuable in their own right. Whether it turns out to be true or not, it will help advance the science -- something HuffPo just doesn't get.
